Automation Component

AND Gate

logic_gate

The AND Gate is a logic component that takes two input signals and outputs an ON signal only when both inputs are simultaneously ON. If either or both inputs are OFF, the output remains OFF. This fundamental boolean logic operation costs 300 Science Points to unlock and is one of three dedicated logic gate components in Timberborn's automation system (alongside the OR Gate and NOT Gate). The AND Gate enables conditional automation that responds to multiple criteria simultaneously.

The AND Gate accepts signals from any two automation sources: sensors, counters, levers, timers, other logic gates, or Relays. Its output then feeds into buildings, valves, or additional logic components. Classic applications include water management circuits where both upstream availability (Depth Sensor above minimum) AND downstream need (Depth Sensor below maximum) must be true before water flows. Another common pattern combines a Weather Station (drought active) AND a Resource Counter (water below threshold) to trigger emergency conservation measures only when both conditions are met.

When designing complex automation networks, the AND Gate serves as a safety mechanism that prevents actions from occurring unless all preconditions are satisfied. Chain multiple AND Gates together to require three or more simultaneous conditions, though this increases circuit complexity and can make debugging difficult. For multi-condition circuits, consider using intermediate Relays with labels to make the signal flow easier to understand. The AND Gate's 300 Science Point cost is reasonable for the capability it provides, and most mid-game automation networks require several AND Gates to function correctly. Keep spare AND Gates in your build queue as your automation needs grow.
