The Dam is the most basic water control structure in Timberborn, available for free with no Science Point cost and no construction materials required. Dams are half-tile-high barriers that block water flow up to 0.65 blocks, making them your first line of defense for managing rivers and creating shallow reservoirs. They are stackable, meaning you can place multiple Dams on top of each other to increase the total barrier height. Unlike Floodgates, Dams have no dynamic height adjustment; they simply block water up to their fixed height, with any water above that level spilling over.

One of the Dam's unique advantages is that Paths can be built on top of them, allowing beaver pedestrian traffic to cross over water barriers. This dual function as both a water barrier and a walkway makes Dams excellent for creating crossings over shallow streams and irrigation channels. In early-game colonies, rows of Dams are often the first water management structures built, used to slow river flow and create shallow pools that extend the availability of water during droughts. Stacking Dams is a free way to build taller water barriers before investing Science Points in Floodgates.

Strategically, Dams work best in combination with Levees and Floodgates to create comprehensive water management systems. Use Dams for low barriers where you want water to overflow at a controlled height, and reserve Levees for locations where you need a complete seal. Because Dams are free, they are ideal for experimenting with water flow patterns early in the game. Place them across river channels to slow water, create holding pools upstream of your colony, or build simple irrigation diversions for crops and trees. As your colony advances, you will likely supplement your Dam infrastructure with Floodgates for precise water level control and Levees for full containment.
