Mushroom

food_ingredient

Mushrooms are a late-game ingredient exclusive to the Iron Teeth faction in Timberborn, cultivated in Hydroponic Gardens rather than on traditional farmland. Unlike most crops that require irrigated soil, Mushrooms grow in enclosed hydroponic facilities, making them independent of outdoor water conditions. However, they have an extremely long growth cycle of 192 hours (8 days), making them one of the slowest ingredients to produce in the game.

Mushrooms cannot be consumed raw and must be fermented at a Fermenter to produce edible Fermented Mushrooms. This processing step adds time and building requirements to an already slow production chain. Due to the long growth cycle, it takes more than 8 Hydroponic Gardens growing Mushrooms just to keep a single Fermenter supplied with continuous input. This high infrastructure requirement makes Mushroom-based food a significant late-game investment.

Despite the slow production rate, Mushrooms offer a valuable advantage: they grow independently of irrigation and weather conditions. During droughts that halt all outdoor crop production, Hydroponic Gardens continue growing Mushrooms uninterrupted (assuming they have water supply). This drought resistance makes Mushrooms a strategic food source for colonies facing severe or prolonged dry seasons. Plan your Mushroom infrastructure well in advance, building multiple Hydroponic Gardens early to accumulate a stockpile of raw Mushrooms for the Fermenter.
