Throttling Valve

actuator

The Throttling Valve restricts the rate of water flow through a channel, allowing players to control not just whether water passes but how quickly it moves. When automated, the valve can switch between two configurable flow rates based on its input signal: one rate when the signal is ON and another when OFF. Players can also configure how quickly the valve transitions between states. At 500 Science Points, the Throttling Valve is a mid-tier automation investment that provides fine-grained water flow control unavailable from any other component.

The Throttling Valve fills a unique niche in water management that Floodgates and Fill Valves cannot address. While Floodgates control water height and Fill Valves maintain target depths, the Throttling Valve specifically governs the volume of water passing through per unit of time. This is crucial for preventing downstream flooding when opening water channels, gradually filling reservoirs without overwhelming their capacity, and managing the flow rate through industrial water systems like the Centrifuge's Badwater intake.

Advanced water management circuits often combine all three valve types: Depth Sensors feed into AND Gates that control Fill Valves for depth maintenance, while Throttling Valves limit the rate at which water enters or exits the system. A practical example is a dam release circuit where a Depth Sensor detects high water behind the dam, triggering a Throttling Valve to slowly release water downstream rather than flooding the area with a sudden surge. Set the transition speed to a slow value for gradual changes or a fast value for rapid response. The 500 Science Point cost reflects the Throttling Valve's advanced capabilities, and it is typically unlocked after basic sensors and logic gates are already in place.
