Dirt Pile

storage

The Dirt Pile is a specialized storage building unlocked for 500 Science Points, dedicated to storing Dirt for terraforming operations. While standard piles like the Small Pile and Large Pile can also store Dirt among other goods, the Dirt Pile provides focused, high-capacity storage specifically optimized for the large quantities of Dirt needed by terraforming projects. Dirt is the essential resource consumed by the Terraforming Station to create new terrain blocks (at 6 Dirt per block), making dedicated Dirt storage critical for any colony engaged in significant landscape modification.

The Dirt Pile is most valuable when placed as a buffer between the Dirt Excavator (which produces Dirt) and the Terraforming Station (which consumes it). Without adequate Dirt storage, your Excavator will stall when its output has nowhere to go, and your Terraforming Station will idle when Builders cannot find Dirt to place as terrain blocks. By maintaining well-stocked Dirt Piles near both the production and consumption ends of your terraforming pipeline, you ensure smooth, continuous terrain modification operations that do not bottleneck on storage capacity.

For large-scale terraforming projects such as building land bridges, filling canyons, or constructing natural dams, you may need multiple Dirt Piles to handle the volume of Dirt flowing through your system. Position them along the hauling route between your Dirt Excavator and the active terraforming site, creating a relay chain that minimizes individual hauler travel distances. When no terraforming is actively underway, Dirt Piles serve as strategic reserves, stockpiling Dirt for future projects. Combine Dirt Piles with Large Piles for overflow storage, and scale up your Dirt Excavator operations to keep pace with ambitious terrain construction goals.
