Natural Dam

Natural Dams are terrain features in Timberborn that function similarly to player-built dams but exist as permanent fixtures of the landscape. These structures block water flow up to half a tile in height, allowing water to spill over once it reaches that threshold. This partial blocking effect creates natural pools and shallow reservoirs across the map, shaping the flow of rivers and influencing where water collects during the Temperate season. Natural Dams cannot be removed or modified by beavers, so players must incorporate them into their water management plans from the start.
The half-tile water retention of Natural Dams makes them useful but limited compared to full-height player-built dams and levees. They can hold back shallow pools of water that persist into the early stages of a Drought, providing a small buffer of moisture for nearby crops and water pumps. However, their limited height means they cannot create deep reservoirs on their own. Players often augment Natural Dams by building additional dam segments or levees on top of or adjacent to them, effectively combining the natural terrain feature with constructed infrastructure to create larger, more effective water storage areas.
Understanding the placement of Natural Dams on a map helps players identify natural chokepoints and water collection areas. These features often mark locations where rivers naturally slow down and pool, creating fertile zones for farming and forestry. During Badtide events, Natural Dams can inadvertently trap contaminated Badwater in low-lying areas, turning previously productive farmland into toxic pools. Players should plan drainage routes and floodgate placements around Natural Dams to ensure that contaminated water can be flushed away when Temperate weather returns. On maps with numerous Natural Dams, the terrain naturally creates a series of stepped pools that can be leveraged for terraced agriculture and distributed water storage.
