Dirt Excavator
landscaping
The Dirt Excavator is a powered landscaping building unlocked for 2000 Science Points that digs a 5x5 hole downward through terrain while producing Dirt as a resource. Unlike Dynamite, which destroys terrain blocks instantly but produces nothing, the Dirt Excavator slowly drills layer by layer to the bottom of the map, continuously extracting Dirt that can be stored in Dirt Piles and later used by the Terraforming Station to create new terrain blocks. Once it reaches the lowest layer of terrain, the Excavator continues mining indefinitely without destroying that final layer, providing an infinite source of Dirt.
The Dirt Excavator serves two distinct purposes: terrain removal and Dirt production. For pure terrain removal, Dynamite variants are significantly faster and more flexible in their placement. However, the Dirt Excavator produces Dirt (6 Dirt per terrain block extracted), which is the essential raw material for the Terraforming Station to build new terrain blocks. This makes the Excavator indispensable for colonies that need to add terrain, such as building land bridges, filling gaps, creating elevated platforms from natural terrain, or extending riverbanks. The 5x5 excavation area also creates deep, uniform shafts useful for Gravity Battery installations.
At 2000 Science Points, the Dirt Excavator is one of the most expensive buildings to unlock, placing it firmly in late-game progression. It requires continuous power to operate and works slowly compared to Dynamite, so plan excavation projects over long time horizons. Position the Excavator where you want a deep shaft or pit, and let it run while your colony handles other priorities. The extracted Dirt should be stored in nearby Dirt Piles or Large Piles for later transport to Terraforming Stations. For colonies that need to reshape terrain extensively, running multiple Dirt Excavators simultaneously can significantly increase your Dirt supply, enabling large-scale terrain construction projects across your map.
