Aquifers are underground natural structures in Timberborn that can be activated to become supplementary water sources, providing a vital lifeline during Drought conditions. These subterranean reservoirs are scattered across maps and remain dormant until a player constructs an Aquifer Drill on top of them. Once drilled, an Aquifer produces flowing water during the Temperate season, effectively adding a new Water Source to the map. This makes Aquifers one of the most strategically valuable terrain features, especially on maps where surface Water Sources are limited or positioned inconveniently.

Each Aquifer can be connected to a power supply of up to 400 horsepower to operate the Aquifer Drill. The drill must be carefully positioned directly over the Aquifer site, so players need to plan their infrastructure around these locations. During the Temperate season, activated Aquifers supplement the natural water flow, helping to fill reservoirs and irrigate distant farmland. The additional water production can be the difference between a thriving colony and one that barely survives extended Droughts. On maps like Oasis, Aquifers play a central role in the overall water strategy, as the map is specifically designed around aquifer-based water access.

Locating and activating Aquifers should be a priority in the mid-game, once basic colony infrastructure is established and power generation is sufficient. Players should survey the map early to identify Aquifer locations and plan expansion paths that bring districts within reach of these resources. Combining Aquifer Drills with dams and water storage tanks creates a robust water management network that can sustain large populations through even the longest Droughts. Since Aquifers are fixed terrain features that cannot be moved or created, their placement on each map heavily influences optimal district placement and colony layout.
