Thorns

Thorns are impenetrable natural obstacles in Timberborn that block both beaver movement and fluid flow, including irrigation and Badwater contamination. These dense, hazardous growths are found on maps like Helix Mountain and Mountain Range, where they create impassable barriers that force players to find alternate routes for both their beavers and their waterways. Thorns cannot be walked through, built upon, or easily bypassed, making them a significant factor in path planning and district layout.
While Thorns can be demolished by assigning builders to the task, the process is lengthy and comes at a cost: beavers who work on removing Thorns will suffer injuries during the demolition process. This makes clearing Thorns a calculated decision rather than a routine action. Players must weigh whether the terrain behind the obstacle is valuable enough to justify the time investment and the risk of temporarily losing workers to injury recovery. In some cases, it may be more efficient to simply build around Thorns rather than through them, especially if the blocked area does not contain critical resources.
Thorns also have a defensive utility that savvy players can exploit. Because they block both irrigation and contamination, Thorns act as natural barriers against Badwater spread during Badtide events. Areas behind a line of Thorns are naturally protected from toxic fluid flows, which can be useful for safeguarding farmland or creating safe zones without investing in levees and dams. However, this same blocking effect also prevents clean water irrigation from reaching those areas, so players must establish independent water supplies for any districts built behind Thorn barriers. The dual nature of Thorns as both obstacle and shield makes them one of the more tactically interesting terrain features in the game.
