Irrigation Barrier

landscaping

The Irrigation Barrier is an Iron Teeth-exclusive landscaping structure unlocked for 500 Science Points that blocks both contamination spread and irrigation spread through terrain. While the Folktails Contamination Barrier only prevents contaminated terrain from expanding, the Irrigation Barrier goes further by also blocking the beneficial irrigation effect that water provides to nearby soil. This dual-blocking behavior makes the Irrigation Barrier a more aggressive containment tool, suitable for Iron Teeth colonies that prioritize industrial contamination management over agricultural flexibility.

The irrigation-blocking property of this barrier has important implications for colony planning. Any plants on the protected side of an Irrigation Barrier will not receive irrigation from water sources on the contaminated side, even if that water is clean. This means you must provide alternative irrigation for crops and trees in barrier-protected zones, either through separate clean water channels, irrigation pools fed by Fluid Dumps, or other water routing systems that bypass the barrier. This tradeoff between contamination protection and irrigation access requires more sophisticated water engineering than the simpler Folktails Contamination Barrier.

When designing your Iron Teeth colony layout, place Irrigation Barriers strategically to contain Badtide contamination while minimizing disruption to your water-dependent agriculture. Create dedicated irrigation systems on the protected side of barriers using clean water routed from upstream sources through Valve Gates and Sluices. The Irrigation Barrier works well in combination with the Badwater Discharge, which gives Iron Teeth colonies controlled access to Badwater for industrial purposes (like feeding the Explosives Factory) while keeping contamination contained behind barrier lines. For purely industrial zones where no plants grow, the irrigation-blocking effect is irrelevant, making Irrigation Barriers ideal for protecting factory districts.
