Power Wheel

power

The Power Wheel is the most basic power generation building available to both factions, requiring no Science Points to unlock and serving as a reliable backup energy source from the very start of a colony. Costing only 20 Logs to construct, it occupies a compact 3x1 footprint and employs a single beaver who runs inside the wheel to generate a base output of 50 horsepower. Unlike water-dependent generators such as the Water Wheel, the Power Wheel functions regardless of river placement or water flow, making it an indispensable fallback during droughts when rivers run dry.

One of the most interesting aspects of the Power Wheel is that its output scales directly with the operating beaver's movement speed. A healthy, well-cared-for beaver with high Well-Being bonuses can push the output up to approximately 85 horsepower (at +70% movement speed), while a dehydrated beaver suffering from thirst penalties may only generate around 38 horsepower. This creates a direct connection between your colony's Well-Being infrastructure and its power grid: buildings like the Campfire, Shower, and Carousel that keep beavers happy will also keep your Power Wheels spinning faster. Strategic players will ensure that Power Wheel operators receive priority access to food, water, and leisure facilities.

The Power Wheel connects to the power network through a single connection point on its side, which means careful placement alongside Power Shafts is essential for integrating it into a larger grid. While it cannot match the raw output of mid-game generators like the Engine or late-game options like the Geothermal Engine, the Power Wheel remains useful throughout a playthrough as supplemental power for small outposts or remote districts. Pairing several Power Wheels together can bridge energy gaps during drought seasons when Water Wheels lose their flow, buying precious time until conditions improve.
