Algae
food_ingredient
Algae is a late-game ingredient exclusive to the Iron Teeth faction in Timberborn, cultivated in Hydroponic Gardens. Like Mushrooms, Algae grows in controlled indoor environments rather than on outdoor farmland, making it independent of traditional irrigation systems. Algae has an even longer growth cycle than Mushrooms at 288 hours (12 days), making it the slowest-growing ingredient in the game. This extreme growth time demands significant planning and infrastructure investment.
Algae is processed at the Food Factory alongside Canola Oil to produce Algae Rations, using a recipe of 20 Algae and 20 Canola Oil to create 60 Algae Rations. This means Algae production must be coordinated with Canola farming and oil pressing, creating a dual supply chain. The slow Algae growth rate means you need many Hydroponic Gardens dedicated to Algae cultivation to maintain any meaningful production throughput.
Despite the extreme growth time, Algae has the same drought-resistance advantage as Mushrooms: Hydroponic Gardens continue producing regardless of outdoor water conditions. This makes Algae a strategic late-game resource for colonies that face severe drought cycles. Start building Hydroponic Gardens for Algae production well before you need the finished Algae Rations, as the 12-day growth cycle means there is a long lead time between planting and harvest. Pair your Algae infrastructure with Oil Press capacity to ensure Canola Oil is available when Algae batches complete.
