Algae

Algae is an Iron Teeth-exclusive hydroponic crop that matures in 12 days and produces a remarkable yield of 70 Algae per harvest. As the highest-yielding crop in Timberborn by raw numbers, Algae represents the pinnacle of space-efficient food production. Like Mushrooms, Algae is grown in hydroponic facilities that operate independently of natural water sources and weather conditions, making it completely drought-proof. This combination of extreme yield and drought immunity makes Algae one of the most strategically important crops for Iron Teeth settlements, particularly on maps with harsh or unpredictable drought cycles.
Algae is cultivated in specialized hydroponic buildings that require Power to operate. The 12-day growth cycle is the longest of any Iron Teeth crop, but the 70-unit yield per tile more than compensates for the wait, delivering roughly 5.8 food units per tile per day. This is an exceptional efficiency ratio that no other crop in the game can match in terms of raw output per growing space. Algae can also be processed with Canola Oil to produce Algae Rations, adding another option to the Iron Teeth food variety lineup. The hydroponic growing method allows Algae farms to be placed anywhere, including inside settlement cores or on elevated terrain far from water, providing maximum flexibility in settlement layout and design.
Strategically, Algae farming should be a high priority for any Iron Teeth settlement that has access to hydroponic infrastructure. The drought-proof nature of hydroponic crops means that Algae provides guaranteed food production even during the longest dry spells, when all outdoor crops, aquatic farms, and even some bush and tree harvests may cease. Pairing Algae with Mushrooms (8 days, yield 45) in a combined hydroponic operation creates an extremely resilient food system that can sustain a colony through virtually any drought. For late-game settlements with Food Factory access, processing Algae into Algae Rations with Canola Oil adds food variety and wellbeing benefits. On maps with short wet seasons and long droughts, prioritizing hydroponic Algae production over traditional outdoor farming can be a winning strategy. Compared to outdoor crops like Corn (10 days, yield 2, processed into 60 Corn Rations), Algae offers a different kind of efficiency: lower per-unit food value but far higher raw yield and complete drought independence. A well-rounded Iron Teeth food economy uses outdoor crops during wet seasons and relies on hydroponic Mushrooms and Algae to carry the colony through dry periods.
