Potatoes
food_ingredient
Potatoes are an early-game ingredient in Timberborn, planted and harvested by beavers working at Efficient Farmhouses. Each Potato crop takes 6 days to grow, yielding a production rate of approximately 0.66 Potatoes per day per tile. While this makes them slightly less space-efficient than Carrots (which yield 0.75 food per day), the longer growth cycle means farmers spend less time actively tending Potato fields, freeing up labor for other tasks.
Potatoes cannot be eaten raw and must be cooked into Grilled Potatoes at a Grill before beavers can consume them. This processing requirement adds a step to the food chain but results in a more satisfying meal. The Grill consumes a small amount of Logs as fuel while cooking, so Potato-based food production ties into your broader wood supply chain. Despite this extra step, Grilled Potatoes are a staple food for many colonies due to their reliable production.
When planning your Potato farming, consider that the 6-day growth cycle makes pre-drought preparation especially important. Start planting Potatoes well before a drought is expected, and ensure you have enough Grilled Potatoes stockpiled to feed your colony through dry periods. Pair your Potato fields with a nearby Grill to minimize transportation time between harvest and cooking. Since Potatoes compete with other crops for irrigated farmland, balance your planting between Potatoes, Carrots, Wheat, and other crops based on your colony's current needs and food diversity goals.
