Potatoes are a Folktails-exclusive crop that matures in 6 days and yields 1 Potato per harvest. Unlike Carrots and Sunflower Seeds, Potatoes cannot be eaten raw; they must be processed at a Grill, where each Potato is converted into 4 Grilled Potatoes. This processing step transforms a seemingly modest single-unit yield into a substantial food output, making Potatoes one of the most food-efficient crops available to the Folktails faction once the necessary infrastructure is in place. The Grilled Potato production chain represents the first step up from raw-edible crops into processed food territory.

The Potato production chain is relatively simple: Potatoes are grown in Farmhouses or Efficient Farmhouses, harvested after 6 days, and then transported to a Grill where a worker converts them into Grilled Potatoes. Each Potato produces 4 Grilled Potatoes, meaning that each farm tile effectively generates 4 food units per 6-day cycle, or about 0.67 food per tile per day. This is a significant improvement over raw Carrots (0.75 per day but with no processing needed) when you factor in the higher total food value of cooked meals. The Grill requires fuel (Logs) to operate, so players need to ensure a steady wood supply alongside their Potato farms. Beehives can reduce the 6-day growth time by 30%, bringing it down to roughly 4.2 days and further improving efficiency.

Strategically, Potatoes should be introduced once a Folktails settlement has established a reliable Carrot farm and has spare workers to staff a Grill. The transition from raw Carrots to Grilled Potatoes marks an important upgrade in food production capacity, as the 4x multiplication from grilling means that even a small Potato farm can feed a large population. Players often run Carrot and Potato farms in parallel, using Carrots as an immediate food buffer while Potatoes provide the bulk of the colony's long-term nutrition. Compared to the more complex Wheat-to-Bread chain (which requires both a Gristmill and a Bakery), the Potato-to-Grill chain is simpler and comes online faster, making it the preferred mid-game food source for most Folktails players. On drought-prone maps, the 6-day growth time is still manageable, though players should prioritize irrigation to avoid losing crops during dry spells.
