Wheat

food_ingredient

Wheat is a key agricultural ingredient in Timberborn, grown and harvested by beavers working at Farmhouses. As a crop, Wheat takes several days to grow on irrigated farmland before it can be harvested and processed. Wheat cannot be consumed directly by beavers; instead, it must first be ground into Wheat Flour at a Gristmill and then baked into Bread or Maple Pastries at a Bakery. This multi-step processing chain makes Wheat the foundation of the most advanced food production system in the Folktails faction.

Wheat farming requires careful planning around irrigation and drought cycles. Since Wheat needs continuous water access to grow, any interruption in irrigation will stall crop development, potentially leaving your colony without flour and bread during critical periods. Planting Wheat fields near reliable water sources and building irrigation infrastructure (channels, dams, and levees) to maintain water flow across farmland is essential for consistent harvests.

The downstream value of Wheat is enormous. Through the Gristmill and Bakery chain, a single Wheat crop eventually becomes Bread (a highly satisfying mid-game food) or Maple Pastries (a late-game delicacy when combined with Maple Syrup). This makes Wheat one of the most valuable crops per tile in the game, justifying the investment in processing infrastructure. Dedicate a significant portion of your farmland to Wheat once you have Gristmills and Bakeries operational, and stockpile both raw Wheat and finished Wheat Flour to buffer against drought-related production gaps.
