Water Pump

The Water Pump is the most basic water extraction building in Timberborn, available to both factions at no Science Point cost and serving as every colony's first source of drinkable Water. This small structure employs 1 worker who manually pumps water from nearby bodies of water up to 2 blocks deep, converting it into the Water good that beavers need to survive. The Water Pump requires no power and can be placed directly adjacent to any water source, making it the go-to building for establishing your initial water supply chain immediately after settling a new district.

While essential in the early game, the Water Pump has significant limitations that become apparent as your colony grows. Its shallow 2-block pumping depth means it can only extract water from surface-level sources, leaving deeper reservoirs untapped. During droughts, when water levels drop, shallow pumps may lose access to water entirely, creating a critical vulnerability in your supply chain. The single worker slot also limits throughput, meaning you will need multiple Water Pumps along a riverbank to supply even a modest population. Production output depends on water availability directly beneath the pump.

Despite its limitations, the Water Pump remains useful throughout the game as a supplementary water source and as the backbone of early district establishment. When founding a new district via a District Crossing, placing a few Water Pumps along the nearest water source provides immediate hydration while you work toward unlocking more advanced options like the Large Water Pump (Folktails) or Deep Water Pump (Iron Teeth). Position your Water Pumps where water tends to pool or flow consistently, and consider building small dams or levees upstream to maintain water depth during dry periods. Pair them with Water Tanks to build a reserve that can sustain your beavers through short droughts.
