Spiral Stairs

Spiral Stairs are a premium vertical movement structure introduced in Timberborn v1.0, offering a more compact alternative to standard Stairs. Unlocked for 350 Science Points and built from 1 Log and 4 Treated Planks, Spiral Stairs allow beavers and Bots to ascend or descend one block of height in a tighter footprint. The use of Treated Planks as a construction material places them later in the tech tree than basic Stairs, requiring a Wood Workshop to process the Treated Planks before construction can begin.
The primary advantage of Spiral Stairs over regular Stairs is their more efficient use of horizontal space when building vertical access towers. In dense colonies where every tile counts, the ability to create compact staircases that wind upward without sprawling outward is invaluable. Spiral Stairs connect to Paths at both their top and bottom, maintaining full district connectivity across elevation changes. They are especially useful in urban-style builds where multiple floors of housing, production, and storage are stacked vertically using Platforms and Metal Platforms.
When deciding between Stairs and Spiral Stairs, consider your colony's progression stage and resource availability. Basic Stairs are cheaper and available earlier, making them ideal for initial vertical construction. Spiral Stairs become the better choice once you have steady Treated Plank production, particularly for retrofitting existing tall structures or building new high-density vertical complexes. For the fastest vertical transit in late-game colonies, combine Spiral Stairs with Zipline Stations (Folktails) or Tubeway Stations (Iron Teeth) to handle long-distance elevation changes while using Spiral Stairs for local floor-to-floor access.
