Cattail Root
food_ingredient
Cattail Root is a mid-game aquatic ingredient in Timberborn, harvested from Cattail crops grown at Aquatic Farmhouses. Unlike standard crops that require irrigated soil, Cattails are planted in shallow water (less than 1 block deep), making them one of the few food production options that utilize water-covered terrain. This unique growing requirement turns otherwise unusable flooded areas into productive farmland, expanding your colony's agricultural capacity.
Cattail Roots cannot be consumed directly and must be processed through a two-step chain to become edible. First, they are ground into Cattail Flour at a Gristmill (the same building used for Wheat Flour). Then the Cattail Flour is baked into Cattail Crackers at a Bakery. This processing chain shares infrastructure with the Wheat-to-Bread pipeline, allowing efficient use of your Gristmills and Bakeries for multiple food products.
Aquatic farming with Cattails requires stable water levels in your growing areas. If the water dries up or deepens beyond the crop's tolerance, the Cattails will fail. Build small dams or shallow reservoirs specifically for Cattail farming, and ensure these areas maintain consistent water depth through both wet seasons and droughts. Cattail farming is an excellent complement to traditional land-based agriculture, as it exploits water-covered terrain that would otherwise go unused. Pair your Aquatic Farmhouses with Gristmills and Bakeries to create a complete aquatic food production chain.
