Cattail is a Folktails-exclusive aquatic crop that grows in shallow water, maturing in 8 days and yielding 3 Cattail Roots per harvest. As one of only two aquatic crops available to the Folktails (alongside Spadderdock), Cattail allows players to turn flooded or irrigated areas into productive farmland. Cattail Roots are processed at a Gristmill into Cattail Flour, which is then baked at a Bakery into Cattail Crackers. This production chain mirrors the Wheat-to-Bread pipeline but uses aquatic growing space instead of dry land, effectively expanding the total agricultural capacity of a settlement.

Cattail is grown in Aquatic Farmhouses, which are specialized buildings that operate on water tiles. Each tile takes 0.2 hours to plant, and the 8-day growth time is moderate compared to other Folktails crops. The yield of 3 Cattail Roots per tile is notably generous, making Cattail one of the higher-yielding aquatic crops. The processing chain requires a Gristmill to convert Cattail Roots into Cattail Flour, followed by a Bakery to bake them into Cattail Crackers. This is the same pair of buildings used in the Wheat-to-Bread chain, so Folktails players can share infrastructure between the two crop lines. Beehives can reduce the growth time by 30%, bringing it down to approximately 5.6 days.

Strategically, Cattail is an excellent crop for Folktails settlements built near rivers, lakes, or managed waterways. By placing Aquatic Farmhouses in shallow water zones, players can produce food without consuming any dry land, leaving more room for buildings, land-based crops, and tree plantations. Cattail pairs naturally with Spadderdock, the other Folktails aquatic crop, allowing players to create diversified water-based farms. On maps with abundant water features, dedicating significant aquatic acreage to Cattail can substantially boost food production. During droughts, however, water levels may drop below the threshold needed for aquatic farming, so players should plan their water management infrastructure (dams, floodgates, Water Dumps) to maintain water levels in Cattail-growing areas. Compared to land-based Wheat (10 days, yield 1), Cattail offers faster growth and a higher raw yield, making it one of the best food crops in the Folktails lineup when water is available.
