Plains

beginner

Plains is a 256x256 beginner-friendly map that serves as the ideal starting point for new Timberborn players. Described as having "expansive areas as flat as a beaver's tail," this region features a large river flowing into a lake across predominantly flat terrain with minimal elevation changes. The map provides 11 Water Sources with a combined output of 9.0 cubic meters per second and 2 Badwater Sources totaling 3.5 cubic meters per second. With 3 Underground Ruins containing 23,730 units of scrap, 379 bushes, and over 2,300 trees (including 533 mature birch, 1,428 mature pine, and 313 mature oak), Plains offers abundant resources that make early colony establishment straightforward.

The flat terrain of Plains makes building placement and infrastructure planning exceptionally simple compared to more vertical maps like Terraces or Canyon. Players have ample room to lay out efficient districts with organized housing, food production, and industrial zones. The large river provides a natural corridor for dam placement, and the downstream lake creates a ready-made reservoir that can store significant water volumes for Drought survival. The generous water flow rate means that even modest dam construction can create substantial reserves. New players should focus on damming the main river early, establishing farms along the irrigated floodplain, and gradually expanding toward the Underground Ruins for long-term scrap production.

While Plains is designed for beginners, it also offers interesting challenges for experienced players on higher difficulty settings. The relatively low Badwater output makes contamination management less demanding than on maps like Thousand Islands or Helix Mountain, but longer Droughts on hard difficulty still require substantial water storage. Both the Folktails and Iron Teeth factions perform well on this map, as the flat terrain suits the Folktails' agricultural focus while providing enough space and resources for Iron Teeth's industrial buildings. Plains is an excellent map for learning core mechanics such as water management, crop rotation, district expansion, and weather cycle preparation before tackling more challenging terrain.
