Tree
Birch
common
Birch is the fastest-growing tree available to all factions in Timberborn, reaching full maturity in just 7 days. It yields a single Log when felled by a Lumberjack, making it the lowest-output tree in terms of raw lumber. However, its rapid growth cycle gives it an important niche in the early game, where settlements desperately need a steady trickle of wood to construct basic infrastructure like Lumberjack Flags, Foresters, Lodges, and Water Pumps. With 11 days of drought resistance, Birch can survive moderate dry spells, though it is less hardy than Oak or Pine. Because a Birch can be planted, grown, and harvested so quickly, new colonies can bootstrap their wood supply long before slower species like Oak or Pine become viable.
From a production standpoint, Birch does not provide any secondary resources; it produces only Logs with no bonus materials like Pine Resin or Maple Syrup. A Lumberjack needs roughly 1 hour to fell a Birch, and a Forester spends about 0.5 hours planting one, making it the least labor-intensive tree to manage. This efficiency means that a single Forester paired with a Lumberjack Flag can cycle through Birch plantations at a brisk pace, freeing up worker-hours for other tasks. The tree occupies a relatively small footprint, allowing dense planting patterns that maximize log output per tile over time.
Strategically, Birch is best used as a transitional crop in the opening stages of a settlement. Players often dedicate their first Forester to planting Birch exclusively, then gradually shift toward Pine (for its Pine Resin and 2-log yield) or Oak (for its massive 8-log harvest) once the colony is stable and can afford longer growth cycles. On drought-prone maps, Birch can serve as a reliable fallback because its short 7-day cycle means you can squeeze in harvests between dry seasons. For Folktails players, pairing Birch with faction-exclusive trees like Chestnut or Maple provides a balanced mix of fast lumber and valuable secondary food resources. Ultimately, while Birch will never be the centerpiece of a mature timber operation, its speed and simplicity make it an indispensable starting resource for every beaver settlement.
