Paper Mill

The Paper Mill is a Folktails wood processing building that converts Logs into Paper, a versatile material used for crafting Books, constructing Beehives, and other applications. Unlocked for 250 Science Points and built from 40 Logs, 40 Planks, and 15 Gears, this 3x2 structure employs 1 worker and requires 80 horsepower to operate at full efficiency. Its recipe is notably generous: 1 Log produces 2 Paper in 1.6 hours, giving it a 2:1 output ratio that makes it one of the more efficient conversion buildings. Internal storage holds 10 Logs on the input side and 20 Paper on the output side.

Paper serves several important functions in the Folktails economy. Its primary downstream consumer is the Printing Press, which converts Paper into Books (1 Paper yields 1 Book in 1.5 hours) and Punchcards (2 Paper plus 1 Plank yields 2 Punchcards). Books are consumed by beavers as a wellbeing item, satisfying their intellectual needs and keeping happiness high. Paper is also a construction material for Beehives (requiring 20 Paper each), so you need a functioning Paper Mill before you can boost your crop growth rates. The 2:1 conversion ratio means a single Paper Mill can supply a Printing Press quite comfortably, with excess Paper available for Beehive construction.

Position your Paper Mill near a Log warehouse and connect it to your power grid via shafts from Water Wheels or other power sources. The 80 horsepower requirement is moderate, sitting between the Lumber Mill's 50 and the Gear Workshop's 120. Since Logs are also consumed by Lumber Mills, Grills, Bakeries, and other fuel-burning buildings, ensure your Lumberjack Flags and Foresters are producing enough wood to supply all competing demands. The Paper Mill pairs naturally with the Printing Press to form a knowledge production pipeline: Logs become Paper, Paper becomes Books, and Books keep your beavers educated and content. Invest in this chain once your basic food and shelter needs are met to unlock significant wellbeing improvements.
