Kohlrabi

Kohlrabi is an Iron Teeth-exclusive crop that matures in just 3 days and yields 2 Kohlrabies per harvest, making it the fastest-growing crop in the entire game. Kohlrabies are eaten raw by beavers with no processing required, serving as the Iron Teeth's primary early-game food source. This role mirrors what Carrots provide for the Folktails faction, giving Iron Teeth players an immediate, reliable food supply that can sustain a growing population from the very first days of a new settlement. The 3-day growth cycle means that farms can be harvested multiple times during a single wet season, ensuring a rapid buildup of food stockpiles.

Kohlrabi is grown in standard Farmhouses and takes 0.2 hours per tile to plant. With a maturation time of only 3 days, a Farmhouse working Kohlrabi fields will cycle through plantings and harvests at an exceptionally fast pace. The yield of 2 per tile translates to roughly 0.67 food per tile per day, which is competitive with most raw-edible crops in the game. Because Kohlrabies need no processing, there is zero infrastructure overhead beyond the Farmhouse itself, allowing Iron Teeth players to focus early resources on other priorities like Power production, water management, and industrial buildings. Beehives can further reduce the already short growth time by 30%, pushing it down to just over 2 days.

Strategically, Kohlrabi should be the first crop planted in any Iron Teeth settlement. Its unmatched speed allows colonies to achieve food self-sufficiency faster than any other faction, which is especially valuable on maps with short wet seasons or aggressive drought cycles. As the settlement matures, players will transition toward more complex food chains like Fermented Cassava (via Fermenter), Fermented Soybeans (via Fermenter with Canola Oil), or Corn Rations and Eggplant Rations (via Food Factory). However, Kohlrabi remains useful throughout the game as a quick-harvest safety crop that can be planted and reaped between droughts when longer-cycle crops would not survive. Compared to the Folktails equivalent, Carrots (4 days, yield 3), Kohlrabi grows a full day faster but yields one fewer unit, resulting in similar overall efficiency. For Iron Teeth players, maintaining a dedicated Kohlrabi farm alongside more advanced crop operations provides excellent food security insurance.
