Spadderdock

Spadderdock is a Folktails-exclusive aquatic crop that grows in shallow water, taking 12 days to mature and yielding 3 Spadderdock per harvest. As the second aquatic crop available to the Folktails faction (alongside Cattail), Spadderdock expands the options for water-based agriculture. Harvested Spadderdock is processed at a Grill, where it is cooked into Grilled Spadderdock, a solid food item for beaver consumption. The 12-day growth time makes Spadderdock the slowest aquatic crop for Folktails, but its yield of 3 per tile and the simplicity of its processing chain (just a Grill, no Gristmill or Bakery needed) give it a distinct role in the faction's food economy.
Spadderdock is grown in Aquatic Farmhouses on water tiles and requires 0.4 hours to plant per tile, which is double the planting time of most other crops. The 12-day maturation is the longest growth cycle among Folktails crops, so large farm areas are needed to maintain continuous output. Once harvested, Spadderdock goes directly to a Grill for processing, skipping the milling step that Cattail and Wheat require. This makes the Spadderdock production chain simpler and cheaper to set up, needing only a Grill rather than both a Gristmill and a Bakery. The Grill does consume fuel (Logs) during cooking, so a wood supply is necessary. Beehives can cut the 12-day growth time by 30%, reducing it to approximately 8.4 days.
Strategically, Spadderdock occupies a middle ground between the simplicity of raw-edible crops and the complexity of flour-based production chains. For Folktails players who have aquatic farmland available but do not yet have the infrastructure for Cattail's Gristmill-to-Bakery chain, Spadderdock offers a simpler alternative that still produces cooked food. On maps with extensive water features, growing both Cattail and Spadderdock together maximizes the use of aquatic space, with Cattail feeding the Bakery line and Spadderdock feeding the Grill line. During droughts, maintaining water levels in Spadderdock farms is critical, so dams and floodgates should be positioned to protect aquatic crop areas. Compared to Cattail (8 days, 3 yield, Gristmill plus Bakery chain), Spadderdock trades a longer growth time and higher planting cost for a much simpler processing requirement. In late-game settlements, both aquatic crops typically run simultaneously, giving Folktails a significant food production advantage on water-rich maps.
