Wheat is a Folktails-exclusive crop that takes 10 days to mature and yields 1 Wheat per harvest. Despite the modest single-unit yield, Wheat feeds into one of the most powerful food production chains in the game. Harvested Wheat is first processed at a Gristmill into Wheat Flour, which is then baked at a Bakery to produce 5 Bread per batch. This multi-step chain transforms a single tile of Wheat into a substantial quantity of high-quality food, making Wheat the cornerstone of late-game Folktails nutrition. Wheat Flour is also used alongside Maple Syrup to produce Maple Pastries, one of the premium food items in the game.
The Wheat production chain requires three stages of infrastructure: Farmhouses (or Efficient Farmhouses) to grow and harvest the Wheat, a Gristmill to grind it into Wheat Flour, and a Bakery to bake the flour into Bread or Maple Pastries. Each stage requires dedicated workers and building space, making this one of the more labor-intensive food chains available. However, the payoff is considerable: 5 Bread from a single Wheat harvest means that each farm tile produces roughly 0.5 food per day, and Bread itself is a high-quality food that provides excellent nutrition. The 10-day growth time is the longest among standard Folktails land crops, so players need larger farm areas to maintain continuous production. Beehives reduce growth time by 30%, cutting it to about 7 days.
Strategically, Wheat should be introduced in the mid-to-late game after a Folktails settlement has secured basic food supplies through Carrots, Sunflowers, or Grilled Potatoes. Building the full Wheat-to-Bread chain requires significant investment in buildings, workers, and logistics, but the result is the most efficient food production system available to the faction. Players who also cultivate Maple trees can combine Wheat Flour with Maple Syrup at Bakeries to produce Maple Pastries, which are even more valuable than standard Bread. On maps with long wet seasons, large Wheat farms can be extremely productive, but on drought-heavy maps, the 10-day growth cycle makes Wheat vulnerable to crop loss if irrigation is not maintained. Compared to Potatoes (6 days, 4 Grilled Potatoes via Grill), Wheat requires more infrastructure but ultimately produces more food per tile over time. A well-optimized Folktails settlement typically runs both Potato and Wheat production in parallel for maximum food output.
