Chestnut

folktails

Chestnut is a Folktails-exclusive tree that matures in 23 days and yields 4 Logs when felled. What makes the Chestnut tree especially valuable is its secondary resource: Chestnuts, a food ingredient gathered by Gatherer Flags every 8 days from mature trees. This dual-purpose nature allows Folktails players to harvest both lumber and food ingredients from the same tree, making Chestnut forests incredibly efficient for settlements that need to balance construction materials with a growing food supply. With 8 days of drought resistance, Chestnut is the least drought-hardy of the Folktails trees, so players on arid maps should ensure proper irrigation.

Chestnuts require processing before beavers can eat them. Raw Chestnuts must be cooked at a Grill to produce Grilled Chestnuts, a tasty food item that satisfies hunger. This adds a step to the production chain compared to eating raw Berries or Carrots, but the resulting Grilled Chestnuts are a higher-quality food. Chestnut Trees serve a dual purpose in your colony: they provide Chestnuts for food production and Logs when felled. This creates an interesting management decision, as you must balance the value of ongoing Chestnut harvests against the immediate need for Logs. Since Chestnut Trees take over three weeks to grow, felling them for wood means waiting a significant period before replacements mature enough to bear fruit again.

For efficient Chestnut production, establish dedicated Chestnut groves near Gatherer Flags and protect these trees from being felled by your lumberjacks. Configure your Forester to plant Chestnut Trees in designated areas, and keep your gathering zones separate from logging zones. Chestnuts provide a food source that does not compete for farmland, which makes them particularly valuable when irrigated growing space is limited. Pair your Chestnut gathering with a well-stocked Grill to convert them into Grilled Chestnuts promptly. A balanced Folktails forestry operation might include Birch for fast early lumber, Chestnut for food supplementation via Grilled Chestnuts, and Maple or Oak for heavy lumber needs. On maps with limited farmland, Chestnut forests can partially compensate for reduced crop output, giving Folktails a unique advantage in food security.
