Sleep
vital
Sleep is a basic need for all beavers in Timberborn. It decays at 60 points per day, with a maximum of 80 and a minimum of -20. Unlike Hunger and Thirst, Sleep deprivation does not kill beavers, but it does impose a -10% Movement Speed penalty and a -33% Sleep restoration efficiency debuff when exhausted. Beavers only sleep during the final hours of the day and will not voluntarily rest outside their scheduled bedtime, even when severely tired. When fully rested, beavers can work extended shifts of up to 32 hours, making Sleep management an important factor in maximizing productivity.
Sleep restoration speed depends on where a beaver rests. Sleeping in dedicated housing (Lodges, Double Lodges, or Triple Lodges for Folktails; Barracks, Rowhouses, or Large Rowhouses for Iron Teeth) provides the fastest restoration at 30 points per hour. Sleeping in a sheltered area restores 13.3 points per hour, while sleeping outdoors with no shelter restores only 10 points per hour. This means homeless beavers take significantly longer to recover from fatigue, reducing their effective working time. The District Center also provides a basic resting location, though dedicated housing is far more efficient.
To manage Sleep effectively, ensure every beaver has assigned housing before expanding the population. Housing buildings should be placed close to workplaces to minimize commute time, since travel time cuts into both working hours and resting hours. Adjusting the work schedule can also help: shorter work shifts leave more time for sleep, which is especially useful during droughts when productivity demands are lower. Players should monitor for the Exhausted status icon and build additional housing if beavers consistently cannot get enough rest. Keeping Sleep satisfied contributes +1 to Well-Being, while unsatisfied Sleep reduces it by -1, so proper housing is a low-cost investment in overall colony performance.
