Carrots

Carrots are a Folktails-exclusive crop that matures in just 4 days and yields 3 Carrots per harvest. As one of the fastest-growing crops in the game, Carrots serve as the primary early-game food source for Folktails settlements. They are eaten raw by beavers with no processing required, which means new colonies can begin feeding their population immediately after the first harvest without needing to build any food-processing buildings like Grills or Bakeries. The combination of a short growth cycle and a generous yield of 3 per harvest makes Carrots exceptionally efficient for bootstrapping a new settlement.
From a farming perspective, Carrots are planted and harvested by beavers working at Farmhouses or Efficient Farmhouses. Each crop tile takes 0.2 hours to plant, and the 4-day maturation period means that a single Farmhouse can cycle through its fields rapidly, producing a steady stream of food. With a yield of 3 Carrots per tile, a modest farm of 20-30 tiles can sustain a significant population. Carrots do not require any further processing, so there is no need to invest in additional buildings or production chains. This simplicity is a major advantage in the early game when resources and workers are scarce. Growth time can be reduced by 30% with a nearby Beehive, bringing the effective maturation down to roughly 2.8 days.
Strategically, Carrots should be the first crop that any Folktails player plants. Their speed and simplicity allow new settlements to achieve food security within the first few days, freeing up attention for other priorities like water management and lumber production. As the settlement matures, players typically supplement Carrots with more complex food chains such as Potatoes (processed into Grilled Potatoes at a Grill) or Wheat (milled into Wheat Flour and baked into Bread). However, Carrots never become obsolete because their raw-edible nature provides an insurance buffer against food chain disruptions. On drought-prone maps, squeezing in a quick Carrot harvest between wet seasons is often possible due to the short 4-day cycle. Compared to the Iron Teeth equivalent, Kohlrabi (3 days, yield 2), Carrots take slightly longer but produce more per harvest, giving Folktails a slight edge in raw food output per tile.
